Title: 5th Grade Woodwinds
First Sounds Unit Overview
Course: 5th Grade Beginning Woodwinds
Grade: 5th
Length:
2 classes for 40 minutes each week.
This unit will coincide with the actual component of learning how to play the instrument.
Unit will begin in September and will last until the end of October/early November.
Expected Outcome:
Ability to identity basic components of playing a specific woodwind instrument
Use of Technology:
I am an itinerant teacher at 8 schools in Cambridge with teaching spaces varying from traditional classrooms to storage areas to hallways. Technology may be only limited to individual or shared chromebooks with presentations being primarily presented on the teacher’s computer.
Distribution of Materials:
Items and assignments will be distributed via a Google Site (students will be given a short link) as Google Classroom is NOT available for instrumental music.
Lesson 1: Choosing a woodwind instrument
Materials: Chromebook; headphones
Assessment: Informal Formative Assessment as students will be selecting an instrument and evaluated on participation.
Students will be introduced to instruments via Google Forms and able to select an instrument to which they would like to perform in class. Students will have the ability to freely view videos in the Google Form and may ask questions during the process. The Instrumental Selection Form includes instructional videos about the basics of the instruments in order for students to listen and see their instrumental options in action. The Form is created in such a way to eliminate responses and includes ‘fail safes’ to ensure students have read the instructions.

Student responses will be calculated in a Google Sheets spreadsheet to determine which instrument they are assigned. Formulas will be added to the Google Sheets in order to help keep track of inventory and student numbers.
Lesson 2: Why Did You Choose Your Instrument?
Materials: Chromebook
Assessment: Formative Assessment as students will be selecting an instrument and evaluated on participation. Assessment will be based on following directions and thoroughness of the student answer.
After students have been placed into instrumental groups and assigned to music class spaces, students will complete a Google Collaboration Doc about why they chose flute or clarinet. Final choices have been made, but adjustment may be considered with a strong answer regarding favorite instrument. He/she will then highlight the text RED or GREEN to help with a more visual representation. Directions for the doc will be shown by teacher example and stated on the Google Doc itself.
Lesson 3: Instrumental Info Presentation
Materials: Chromebook; Headphones
Assessment: Formative Assessment as students will be viewing presentations on instrument preparedness and then applying those topics discussed to a physical instrument.
Final class before being assigned an instrument. Flute and Clarinet students will be shown a brief presentation on the computer called, “Flute!” (or “Clarinet!”) regarding the parts and assembly of their instrument. Flute is a simple instrument to assemble, but extremely difficult to produce a sound; Clarinet is a hard instrument to assemble, but easier to produce a sound. The Google Slides presentations will be supplemented with Google Docs sheets with instructions for reinforcement. The class will conclude with a brief trivia game created in Google Slides to help enforce the different woodwind instruments.
Lesson 4: Review Your Fingerings
Materials: Chromebook
Assessment: Summative Assessment as students will be taking a graded quiz on woodwind fingerings.
Students will complete a Google Form about the first couple of notes on their instrument. Google Form will include matching notes to fingerings and fingerings to notes. The Google Forms will let students know the correct answers and score their quiz at the end. Students may use fingering charts to help with the assignment. Questions and answers are randomized in order to ensure students will not be able to copy others.

Lesson 5: Instrument Scavenger Hunt
Materials: Chromebook; Headphones
Assessment: Combination of Summative and Formative Assessment as students will be provided with some open-ended opinion questions and some quiz questions related to material in the Google Form itself.
Students will complete a Google Form to learn more about their instrument. This will allow students to research famous performers; price; music; etc. This is a great way for them to explore songs that they want to play and perform, and how to obtain and find those resources. The Google Form is a mix of research and listening to various pieces and performers to identify certain characteristics. The Google Form will be graded partly by multiple choice questions by Google while the remaining questions will be graded manually via their responses in the Google Sheets that is exported from the Google Forms.
Lesson 6: Tell Us About Your Instrument
Materials: Chromebook; Headphones; Instrument; Sheet Music
Assessment: Formative Assessment as students will be evaluated on material/content in the media type of their choice and physical presentation.
Students may work individually or in small groups to prepare a short presentation about their instruments. Students may either use Google Slides or Google Docs for the assignment. The assignment should include at least 1 picture of their instrument; 1 video of their instrument; 1 fun fact about their instrument; and why they like their instrument. Google Slides or Docs assignment will be shared with the teacher.
Uses of Collaboration:
Assignments 2 and 6 allow for use of collaboration for the students. Students will collaborate with Google Docs and Google Slides.
How and why GSuite will make this a memorable experience for students:
Students will get an opportunity to learn an instrument and GSuite will provide them opportunities to explore them in new and unique ways. By researching and creating presentations about their instruments, students will become motivated to learn how to play and play their favorite songs. The ability to incorporate technology and learning is a fantastic tool that should pay huge dividends for knowledge retention and exploration.
Uses of Commenting:
Since access to technology is limited in class due to lack or availability of technological resources, commenting will be minimal and most feedback will be provided by instant feedback shortly after completing assignments.
